Sereneshell padded through a wintery forest, her paws freezing down into their core. Around her, shadows cast their darkness, seemingly draped over every branch and treetop. It enveloped her, and she felt as if everything around her was still, waiting with baited breath. She did not know how she had gotten here. It was all a blur. All she knew was that she was very far from her home. It felt like she had been walking for hours, and yet at the same time, she had only just arrived. Brambles and thorns had torn at her pelt, reaching out to catch her in her tracks.
“Poor child,” a shadow whispered, sending chills down her spine. “So very lost… So very alone…”
Sereneshell whipped her head around, trying to see where the voices were coming from. In the darkness, shimmering eyes were beginning to glow.
“The brambles and the stone have shone you no mercy,” the dark voice spoke. A cat emerged from the darkness, his fur a deep ebony hue.
Tears fell from Sereneshell’s ocean eyes, rolling down like a flood in Greenleaf. But by the time they reached the frozen ground beneath, they had already turned to ice.
“You cry,” he spoke in a haunting voice, “You wish for me to save you.”
Sereneshell nodded, trying not to meet the strange cats eyes, which shone like embers in the darkness.
“Oh my love,” he mewed, tilting her head up with the tip of a shadowy tail. “You have been cast aside. You are lost, but I shall find you. I shall bring you home.”
Although his words were strange and cryptic, Sereneshell found herself entranced by them.
In a language never known, Sereneshell could detect the shadows whispering to her. Moving her head from where the black tom held it captive, she tried to search for the source of the whispers. But quickly, the tom recaptured her focus.
“I can see that you are frightened. You fear that I may harm you,” he mewed, his voice soft, and oddly comforting. With suprising gentleness from one that appeared so dark, he licked her cheek, drying the tear that had frozen there.
“I have come to claim your broken heart,” he whispered. His eyes, a haunting gold, never left her own. He once again tilted up her chin, this time using an ebony paw. “You shall soon belong to me..”
Sereneshell found herself leaning into his embrace. With him here, she was not so alone. She was lost, and confused, and still felt so scared, but now he was here. He would bring her home.
“You will free me?”
He nodded sweetly, a purr coming from deep within his chest.
“You have been the obedient child. They sent you out here to me, a sacrifice to the sky, the moon, their precious stars.”
Sereneshell’s paws felt weak and tired, weary from a long journey that she could not even remember taking. She pulled her tail up around her, wishing that it could be of more comfort and warmth.
“Sweet love,” he continued to whisper, pressing his face to hers. “Give yourself to me. I am ensnared in you.”
She met his eyes one more time.
“I have brought you…”

“Home.”
