LOCAL FAUNA
The world of FAD takes place in a fictionalized North Eastern United States: as such, some animals that are included, we are trying to be as accurate as possible: but we are not going into ever single little species, little hints of things. If you feel there is a creature that should be included on this list, please message a member of staff and we will take it into consideration.
TYPES OF FAUNA
In this site, we have broken animals that are NOT Clan Cats, Rogues, Loners or Kittypets into five different categories: Predators, Dangerous, Prey, Other and Mythical.
Predators - These are cats who are not hunted by clan cats: rather, these animals will actively hunt down clan cats, over disputes over territory or food their own food source. They are highly dangerous, but not benevolently dangerous - they should be avoided at all cost.
Dangerous - Dangerous animals are usually large animals who are not necessarily interested in injuring Clan cats, but can easily do so simply by being bothered or spooked by an unwary cat. It could be that they are territorial, too large to easily avoid if angered, or have some sort of quirk in their natural adaptations that can cause damage to a cat. While they do not hunt clan cats, they should be avoided or approached with caution. Some dangerous animals have been hunted for prey, but they must be approached in teams and with caution - they are NOT for solo hunters.
Prey - Smaller animals that are often preyed upon by cats for a source of food. Usually, but not always, these are herbivores. Some of them can be dangerous due to their biting power, stings, or other irritants - but generally speaking injuries caused by these animals are very minor irritants. Prey is considered to be any animal that is widely eaten by any cat, and which can easily be taken down by one, maybe two cats - as opposed to dangerous prey which must be hunted by several at a time.
Other - These animals are not dangerous or predators, but they are also so insignificant that they are usually not hunted as prey - either because they taste foul, or are simply not worth the effort. Some of them are pests or irritants, that can bother a cat, but nothing more.
Mythical - These are animals which the clan cats tell stories about, but have not been seen in any living generation - save perhaps by the very oldest among them. These are cats from the times of the larger warrior cousins; often used for names that inspire the clans, but the idea of what they are and what they do is only a vague memory and impression of the clans. They MAY exist in the area at large and be known to twolegs - but to the world of the clans they may as well be dragons or dinosaurs.
ENCOUNTER RATES
Alternatively, some fauna may be more likely to be found than others: categorizing the likelihood of seeing them as follows:
Very Rare - Maybe once every few seasons, a this creature can be found: usually a Very Rare creature spotting or encounter will require the permission of staff to put out there. They are not mythical, as they have been seen: but not likely to be found.
Rare - At least once a year, these creatures can be spotted: either as they enter the territories through migration or to breed. They are still a strange sight to see, but hardly as near-mythical or strange as to be Very Rare.
Uncommon - These creatures are benevolent to the cats of the clans: while they are encountered more often than once as year, they generally keep out of their way and are unbothered by their presence: hence why they are more commonly seen. But they are not in such high demand or breeding rates that they can be considered common. If they are dangerous or predators, they can be thought of as usual nuisances but not a plague. If they are prey - they are the Macdonald's of a cat's diet - a every-so-often treat which is technically easy to access, but you can't go on having them every night.
Common - At least one a week, these animals can be counted upon to be found around the territories: they are well in demand, breed regularly, and their supplies are steady. This does not mean it will always be the case, but given trends, it is likely that they will be a regular site on excursions outside of the camp.
