The morning sun hadn't even broken the skies darkness when a loud crunching filled the air. Frogpaw opened her eyes, looking around the dark den she slept in, her ceremony was moons away, but she didn't mind, the young brown and tan spotted tabby she-cat enjoyed her den-mates and was quite saddened by the recent ceremony of Eggpelt and Daisyeyes, the two apprentices had left the den and moved in with the warriors as soon as the ceremony was complete. The young she-cat sat up, scratching her ear as the sound became louder. What in Starclan is that noise? Fear crept up her spine as she pictured the large black and white beast bursting into the heart of the camp, it's sharp teeth ripping into her clan-mates. Shaking away her fears she curled back up, trying to push the growing noise away, she would be woken up by her mentor soon enough to go on some patrol, but the noise disturbed her last moments of sleep. With a toothy yawn, the tabby she-cat pushed her way out of the den, careful not to disturb her den-mates as she met the dark, empty camp clearing. The night was eerily quiet, only the ever-growing crunching noise and the whispering of the trees echoed through the darkness. Trees towered over the camp and made the fur on Frogpaw's back stand on end.
"Was it always this creepy?" She mumbled, pawing her way towards the fresh-kill pile. As she reached the tree stump that was hollowed out to hold the clans prey, the crunching came to a stop, the trees went silent and the air around her became heavy. Frogpaw felt her fur rise more, she flattened her ears, turning her head to look behind her. Her eyes widened at the sight of the several large dots that glowed in the shadows of the trees. She felt frozen to the ground, her legs beginning to tremble as she watched the creatures push their way into the camp, destroying the bracken walls.
"T-Twolegs!"
The shriek of Velvetpaw made Frogpaw's head snap to the apprentices den. The younger ginger she-cat was staring at the twoleg's as they stormed into the camp. Cats came charging out, horrified as the twolegs began to grab cats by their scruffs, throwing them into strange boxes and snapping shiny branches over the entrance and exit. Frogpaw watched in horror as more twolegs crowded into the camp, queens wailed out as they snatched up their kits, warriors that fought back were either thrown into the boxes or killed almost instantly. The crunching of bones and screeching of horror filled the air, the young she-cat watched her clan run around in panic, but when her paws finally seemed to break free of their grasp of the ground, it was too late. A large twoleg reached down, snapping his paw around her scruff and dragging her from the earth. She hissed, unsheathing her claws and scratching at its arm, but she did nothing to its pelt and she was eventually thrown into a box. The door snapped shut and she shrunk to the back of the box as the twoleg's grabbed more of her clan-mates.
Frogpaw had passed out during the attack, only waking to strange bright lights. She lifted her head, looking around through blurry eyes, nothing looked right. There were strange grey shiny things that lay around the room, it was all walled in by white but she could see rows and rows of shiny boxes, the branches made of the toughest rock locked each furry thing inside. "Velvetpaw?" Frogpaw hissed, spotting a ginger blob. She pushed her way to the branches, looking out into the room.
"Frogpaw?" The voice was familiar. Frogpaw pushed her nose through the smooth branches to try and get a better look. There! She spotted the black and white bi-colored tom-cat.
"Duskface!" She wailed, her mentor was locked in one of the boxes near whom she believed was Velvetpaw. "Whats going on? Where are we!" She cried, feeling her legs shake with fear.
"I'm not sure, the twoleg's... Their different than the ones near camp..." Her mentors voice faltered, which only made Frogpaw tremble. "There were so many twoleg's that attacked the camp at once, but I think only Rabbitjump and Honeysuckle were murdered." His voice was fading as Frogpaw fell into horrified shock, but everything seemed to only get worse as a loud clicking noise came and then a buzz. A piece of the wall opened and a twoleg wearing a strange white pelt atop its own fur stepped in the room, behind them came another twoleg, but this one pushed some strange flat rock. It was smaller than the other rocks that lay around the room, but it had several strange things atop it. The twoleg's conversed with a strange language Frogpaw couldn't understand. She flinched as the normal looking twoleg walked over to Velvetpaw's box, opening the branch wall and reaching in. The ginger blob just lay still, limp like prey, as the twoleg pulled her out, setting her on one of the long, flat rocks.
"Velvetpaw!" Frogpaw hissed, she knew that it was her from the strange white marking on the back of her neck. The twoleg wearing another pelt grabbed a strange looking twig, jamming it into Velvetpaw's leg. They chattered more to one another before the ginger she-cat twitched. Frogpaw held her breath as she looked out at the scene. She watched as the strange twoleg pressed something, causing a strange transparent case to enclose Velvetpaw in. Frogpaw felt her pelt spike as she watched the back of the ginger she-cat twitch, it moved like small creatures where crawling under her fur, but she let out a shriek of horror as black branches protruded out of Velvetpaw's back, curling over. One after another until there were eight, then they flexed, lifting her body off the flat rock and dangling her legs. She had spider legs coming out of her back! Frogpaw felt light-headed, but she caught the glimpse of Velvetpaw's face before blacking out, her face was contorted, curled and folded into a strange shape, but her fur had fallen out and her skin was ripped at the mouth to allow large fangs to hang on either side, each fang-tip dripped with some type of fluid.
When Frogpaw awoke, Velvetpaw was gone, instead a new cat was laying inside the strange transparent box. Though hard to recognize whom it was Frogpaw noticed they looked nothing like the horrific Velvetpaw, instead it just looked like a normal cat laying limp within the box.
That was, until a voice called out, "Whitestar this is all your fault!" The voice was obvious, it was Redwing, Velvetpaw's mother, the she-cat sounded distraught and Frogpaw couldn't blamed her, she had lost her only kit to twoleg monsters. Things only got worse when Frogpaw noticed the cat beginning to move, it flung itself against the transparent walls, thrashing at where Redwing's voice came from. "What the hell is that!" Frogpaw yowled, now she was no cat to curse, but this young cat had been through quite the day, or was it even day? Either way, once her voice had echoed through the room the grey-colored cat whipped around, meeting Frogpaw's brown eyes with clouded white ones. It hissed, snapping its jaw at her, blood dripping from its mouth as it licked the clear wall, this thing didn't even look like a cat from the front. Its mouth looked rotted out and it didn't even seem to realize who the cat it was clawing so desperately at was, but Frogpaw recognized the dark face, the dark paws. It was Duskface. Frogpaw felt her heart sink, her mentor had been taken like Velvetpaw and was turned into this.... This creature!
"Duskface!" She wailed, tears beading at her eyes. "Duskface please!" but the tom-cat didn't even seem to flinch.
"He's not him anymore Frogpaw." The voice of Mudfoot made her legs weaken. "We have to find some way to escape!" The tom-cat she called her father called out to the cats around the room, mews of agreement vibrated around the room.
"But how are we going to get free? These dens are made of rock, no cat can get out of them!" The frantic wailing of Beetail made Frogpaw sigh, she knew the she-cat was right, but she still wasn't in charge, not unless Whitestar didn't respond or was dead. She knew the deputy was a determined cat, but even the wisest cat couldn't disagree with her words, there was no way to escape.
"Can't we attack them when they open the branched wall?" Daisyeyes spoke out, her soft voice now filled with harsh determination, but even then her voice was hoarse, that's when Frogpaw realized how thirsty she was. They're killing us, even before torturing us. The young she-cat circled her box, curling up on the cold, flat surface. She felt exhausted, even after doing nothing, but what else could she do, a small cat couldn't help get her clan-mates out of this mess.
"Daisyeyes, only one box is opened at a time, there's no way a single cat could defeat two twoleg's and then rescue the rest of us." Frogpaw nodded gently, Nightcloud was right, there was nothing they could do, right?
"Enough!" The strong voice of Whitestar filled the room, sending a shiver down Frogpaw's back. "Arguing over what to do is doing us nothing, eventually the twoleg's will be back to remove Duskface from that box and pick another one of us. What ever they are looking for should not take very long." Frogpaw scoffed, easy for him to say, he had nine lives.
"Whitestar, you are no greater than a rock! Letting your clan-mates die is your best choice? I think we should cause a riot, make as much noise as we can when they re-enter!" Mews of agreement began to chaotically fill the room, stomping of paws on the smooth surface of the small boxes echoed through the room as the loud click and the buzz overpowered the clans agreeing determination. As usual, two twoleg's came prowling in, different than the first, but similar to the first two. On sight, cats began to hiss, yowl, and stomp around, banging their sides into the walls and creating a bunch of racket. Frogpaw felt awkward but quickly joined in, stomping her feet against the rough surface. The twolegs screamed out, thrashing their arms before grabbing some long stick, the normal looking twoleg then thrashed it between the branches of a cage and Frogpaw heard the pain-filled shriek of Daisyeyes, that's when Frogpaw spotted the bolts of lightning swiveling at the end of the stick.
"They can control the skies lightning!" Hissed Eggpelt, his high pitched voice caused panic through the clan, but it was worse when they ripped Daisyeyes from her box, throwing her onto a large smooth rock and stabbing her with a similar stick to the last.
"No!" She wailed in pain and terror, her body thrashed, seizing at the pain that flooded her veins, the young warrior she-cat thrashed on the table, but still she was held in place by the normal looking twoleg. Finally, the cream and white calico she-cat fell still, and with it the twolegs moved her body into a transparent box, standing aside and watching with intense eyes. Frogpaw watched her old den-mate begin to twitch, her body beginning to expand. She watched as the cream-colored pelt began to rip, strips of fur hung as she began to double, no, triple in size! Her body became a stream of red blood as she grew into the size of a Labrador Retriever, just made up of tearing flesh. Frogpaw felt nauseated, having to turn away from the scene. Her ears could hear the chattering of twolegs and then a pop! sound, glancing back she saw the once transparent walls now the color of strawberry jam. Frogpaw wheezed, coughing at the sight, her stomach knotting up as the twolegs left the room once again. She curled up at the back of her cage, flattening her ears and fighting the panic and terrified screeching of her clan-mates. She just wanted to wake up from this nightmare.
When Frogpaw awoken, hands were wrapped around her body. She jumped, unsheathing her claws and scratching the smooth surface as the twoleg pulled her from her box. "N-No! I-I don't want to die!" She wailed, but no soul could save her, instead she was laid onto the large smooth rock, held down by a strong force and then injected with some substance, pain flooding through her body as she wailed out in pain. "Mudfoot! Help! Somebody! Help me!" She cried out, feeling the walls close in around her as she was enclosed in a new transparent box. She watched her vision blur as she spotted her clan-mates watching her death. She screeched in pain, feeling her veins burn with a heat so indescribable, finally she felt everything go away, all her pain, but she wasn't dead. Instead, Frogpaw found herself standing up, her brown paws now fire orange and causing the rock below her to melt away. She looked up to see the twoleg's beginning to panic as she dropped from the flat surface, landing on the hard floor below her. Her paws stung with heat as she watched the twoleg's flee.
Frogpaw looked to where Eggpelt stood, trembling at the sight of her, she raced towards him, touching the branches and watching as they melted away. I can save them! She thought, breathing out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. "Don't worry everyone! I'll save us!" She beamed, racing from box to box and melting away the branched wall and setting her clan-mates free, but she could only reach up so far. How am I supposed to save you all? She thought, but it all came to an end when the twoleg's returned, they wore strange clothing and held strange things. Frogpaw looked up at a strange cylinder, only to watch her vision blacken at the sound of a loud Bang!
"Was it always this creepy?" She mumbled, pawing her way towards the fresh-kill pile. As she reached the tree stump that was hollowed out to hold the clans prey, the crunching came to a stop, the trees went silent and the air around her became heavy. Thank you all for reading! I know I didn't end it as good as I wanted to, but I didn't want it to turn into a heroic story at the end and just remain horror filled. In the end the threat of Frogpaw was eliminated and the testing continued with the remaining cats.
