“Hey, Chickenkit, she’s here!” Flipkit bounded into the medicine cat den, stopping by his dosing brother, “I told you she was here! Now she can tell you a story - like she promised.” The tom turned to his older sister, almost as if challenging her to leave her sunburnt brother. Luckily, Scorpionclaw hadn’t been planning on that at all.
“Okay, okay, sure.” Scorpionclaw laughed lightly, her whiskers twitching as she sat by the nest, “Only if Chickenkit wants me to.” She replied, watching Flipkit almost daring him back.
“Huh - oh, yeah, I’d love a story!” Struggling to sit up, Chickenkit winced slightly as he leaned against his burns to crouch, and Flipkit ran over to crouch beside him, his eyes wide with a grin on his face.
“Alright, if you say so.” Scorpionclaw laughed lightly, “How about the taint of PeakClan?”
“A long time ago, one of PeakClan’s leaders was a young, brave tom, with a pelt that glistened like the stars above us. However, he was blind, leading his clan with little, if no acknowledgment for the true aims and beliefs of others. His deputy was twisted and cursed with evil, her roots sucking the faith of all around her, whilst appearing pretty and harmless. The leader did not see this, and allowed this to worm into his clan, weakening the clan’s morality and destabilising it.
For those who can’t see the light, darkness will always catch up with them, the shadows ready to claim them. StarClan came to save these cats, sending a message through pain to the apprentice of the medicine cat, warning him of the danger laced within the deputy. They were a tree that would set fire to the shrubbery around herself, and then feed off of their pain. Something had to be done.
The visions were not acted upon - out of fear, disagreement or dismissal, no one knows. StarClan’s wrath heightened, sending waves of pain down onto the camp, trying to pull the leader from his daze and gift him the sight that he lacked. They failed, only causing misery upon the cats he led, and he turned away. The response that they wanted was only found once the kits began to suffer, receiving terrible nightmares and fits that shook the camp at its decaying roots. The leader was forced to see his crimes, forced to see the monster behind the smile that was ruling the camp from within.
The deputy was cast out, but the damage had been done. The leader had regained his sight too late, and the rest of the clan no longer trusted his judgement. The monster had cursed him, too, and for that, he had to repent. No one knows what happened, but the leader was returned the next day, found dead in the ocean by a ShellClan warrior.
Of course, there are rumours. Some say the deputy returned, dragging him down to the depths with the thorny roots that she adorned her whole life, before the water washed both of them away. Others say that the sister of the blind leader let her rage take over, forcing the leader under the water to repent for his sins and the suffering, but the water took the leader away as it agreed, when the sister didn’t mean to. Some simply think that StarClan wanted him to pay, so the icy jaws of the frozen river opened wide and swallowed him whole, not letting him free until StarClan had claimed all 9 lives back.
With the evil purged, the clan regrew with the new seeds sown by a leader gifted by StarClan, and the deputy that came with her. The land may be tainted, but they did their best to cure it. Now, the garden grows strong, but some say that the soil from which it grew will never be fully pure, and that their spirits will never leave, always watching.”
